Accidental Love, Now Coming Soon!

My next release, the M/M college roommates novella Accidental Love, is now coming soon at Amber Allure! Part of the Hot College Daze series, it’ll be out on Sunday, February 5. Yay!

Have a gander at the blurb:

College roommates Greg and Keith are polar opposites when it comes to relationships. Greg equates sex with the alcohol and drugs he gave up, while Keith protects his heart by keeping sex strictly casual. At first, neither Greg nor Keith realizes the other is gay, but once they get to know each other better, they feel drawn together, and their developing attraction makes each of them reevaluate his stance on relationships.

Keith starts out thinking he only wants a roommates-with-benefits arrangement, something more than his usual weekend flings but still casual, yet soon he begins to feel more for Greg. Greg’s afraid of what he’s feeling because he has trouble mentally separating sex from the other bad habits that had nearly ruined his life.

Greg’s fears leave him spooked by an impromptu kiss following a game of one-on-one basketball, but that’s nothing compared with how he feels after a dinner date ends with the two men having sex. To help bring Greg back from the edge, Keith opens up his heart, but will it be enough to allow them to move forward together?

Missing Person, Now Found!

Well, hi there. It’s been a minute, hasn’t it? No, I’m not dead or anything. It’s just the holidays! 🙂

I’ve been having a busy December so far. The first weekend was spent in New York, seeing a play and visiting with friends (including fellow Dreamspinner author Rachel West, who is awesome!). Yesterday, my sister/roommate and I had a Christmas party, which was a lot of fun but a LOT of work. The nicest part may end up being that our apartment is now clean and decorated for Christmas, and we still have a couple of weeks to enjoy it!

In writing news, I haven’t been doing much (because: see previous paragraph), but I’m going to be getting back to it this week. I have a fandom project, a new commission project, and a NaNo project to finish. Not to mention a long list of “stories in progress,” and some galley proofs on the next novella coming soon! Plus one of my holiday stories is out and the other comes on the 22nd, and I’ll be doing a couple of blog visits for those.

Now, let’s see if I can manage not to disappear for so long again any time soon… 🙂

Good News & Bad News

Good news: I received a contract offer yesterday from Amber Allure for my college-roommates novella Accidental Love. It will be published as part of the “Hot College Daze” theme. Tentative publication date is February 2012. 🙂

Bad news: I think I’m going to have to give up on NaNo this time around. Not the story; I’m going to keep working on that. But various real-life events are going to make it impossible for me to pile up the word count I’d need to hit 50k this month. Disappointing, sure, but the story itself is still in good shape, so it won’t be too terrible. (Or at least that’s what I’m telling myself…)

Six Sentence Sunday: Model Student

For this week’s Six Sentence Sunday, I’m dipping into the wayback machine and pulling out a snippet from my first published story, Model Student. Can’t believe it’s been a year already! 🙂

One of Aaron’s favorite old guilty-pleasure movies featured Ginger Rogers as a girl trying to decide between three suitors, making her decision based on which of them set off some kind of bells in her head when they kissed. Aaron was pretty sure he was living out the climactic moment right then, mouth fused to Matt’s. It wasn’t until Matt pulled away that Aaron realized it wasn’t bells but his cell phone, chiming and vibrating in his pocket.

Matt was laughing. “I think your thigh is trying to have its way with me,” he said, nudging his leg against the hard case in Aaron’s pocket.

“Yeah, well, so was I,” Aaron grumbled good-naturedly, reluctantly pulling his hand out of Matt’s hair and digging into his pocket instead.

New Author Introduction: Cowboy Way

I’m happy to introduce you to a friend of mine and her writing. Cindy Sutherland’s first novella, Cowboy Way, releases tomorrow from Dreamspinner Press, with another gorgeous cover by Paul Richmond. The blurb:

Ryan Andrews is on the run from past mistakes he doesn’t know how to fix. Lost and alone, all he really wants is a place where he can be himself, but when he pulls up at the ranch where he’s found a job and spies his gorgeous new boss, Ryan is pretty sure fate is out to get him.

Jake Evans is an ex-soldier trying to carve out a life on the ranch he inherited from his grandmother. He doesn’t even have time to realize how lonely he is until the new ranch hand shows up in his driveway. Ryan looks even more lost than Jake feels, and Jake’s locked-up heart seems to break open. Can these two men find in each other find the companionship they crave? Or will their pasts eclipse any possibility of a future?

Cindy was kind enough to provide me with a short excerpt from her story (after the cut). I read it in an early draft form and really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to reading the finished product!

Okay guys, time to get those voting fingers in business!

The GORGEOUS cover fabulous artist Paul Richmond created for my novella Model Student is up for grabs as a limited-edition giclee print. The catch? First it has to win his “Uncovered” contest. It’s up against three tough contenders, but I don’t think I’m totally biased when I say it’s the best. Okay, maybe I am, but still. 😉

You can get complete information on the contest, and a bunch of awesome bonus material from Paul, at Elisa’s Reviews and Ramblings. If you’d rather cut right to the chase, you can go HERE to vote. A Writing Journey

Original version written for Erotic Horizons

I’ve always been a writer. I come from a family of writers, and we joke that we have printer’s ink instead of blood in our veins—even though that’s a little out of date these days! I started out my career as a newspaper features writer, and at first, I loved it. I got to interview people, figure out interesting ways to present their stories, cover entertainment events, and even meet celebrities now and then. I didn’t have to deal with the deadline pressure of working on breaking news, and once my editor figured out that I was pretty sharp in that area too, I started getting assigned more editing tasks.

It took me a couple of years to figure out that the job was draining all of my creative energy.

I didn’t think of myself as a fiction writer back then, but I did have ideas floating through my head all the time, both fiction and nonfiction. Problem was, after spending the bulk of my forty-plus-hour work week writing, I had absolutely no desire to write on my own time. And it was gradually eating away at me.

My turning point came when I was shifted into a layout editor position, giving up the bulk of my writing duties at work. That was so much better. I was responsible for designing our page layouts, which gave me some creative outlet, and switching from writing to editing gave me freedom to write on my own time. I’ve stayed in editing since then, with few if any writing responsibilities, and it’s worked very well for me. It’s challenging enough to be interesting, without taking away from my creativity.

Even after the switch to editing, though, it took a few years for my right brain to kick back in fully. That’s when I started writing fanfiction. I know a lot of professional authors are afraid of admitting to any connection to fanfic, but I don’t see it that way. I think writing fanfiction can be an excellent training ground for writing original fiction, for those who are interested in making that transition. I learned how to write better description, how to develop characters, how to “hear” a character’s voice in your head, and how to accept criticism and editing of my work. It’s akin to an apprenticeship, where you gradually learn the different parts of the job until you’re finally cleared and released to go off on your own.

My first novella, Model Student, originated as a fanfiction story. It was quite a divergence from the original material to start with—what’s called “alternate universe,” for those unfamiliar with fanfic terminology—which means it used only parts of the main characters’ backstories. I didn’t have a long way to go to make it a standalone, original story. I’ve gone through the same process with two other fanfic stories, and I have a couple more in mind, but the bulk of my writing these days is original. I still write fanfic, but chances are those stories will stay in the fanfic realm.

From here, my goal is just to continue writing. I don’t plan to make writing a career, since I’ve been that route already. I don’t want that kind of pressure on a regular basis again. In the end, I’m doing this mostly as a hobby. Getting paid for it is just a very nice bonus!

>Model Student review at Fallen Angel

>Teresa at Fallen Angel Reviews has posted a very happy-making review of Model Student. Things I particularly love to read: This is the first book I have read by Ms. Connor and it won’t be the last.

Thank you, Teresa!
