Friday Feedbag: How To Make Southern Fried Chicken

Okay, to start with, the title of this post is somewhat misleading. There is no one way to make Southern fried chicken. There are nearly as many variations as there are Southern cooks. But this is the way fried chicken has been cooked in my household (first my parents’ house, and now mine) my entire life. I love the taste, of course, but I also love the simplicity. No breading, battering, deep-frying, or double-frying required!

Have You Hugged Your Book Today?

*hugs them more*

Excerpt from Sand & Water

Sand & Water, which comes out on Monday, is my first published novel. I’ve always been much more of a short story writer, but a couple years ago, I decided to give National Novel Writing Month a try. I don’t know why the structure works for me, but it does. The first year, I wrote 53,000 words on a fanfiction project, and last year, I wrote 63,000 on Sand & Water. I finished the first draft a month later. My plan for this year is to finish at least one book of a trilogy I’ve been developing.

In this excerpt, John who’s, a widower raising his young daughter, takes her to the park, where he meets Bryan. The two men strike up a friendship, but it won’t be long until it develops into more. Enjoy. 🙂

New Author Introduction: Cowboy Way

I’m happy to introduce you to a friend of mine and her writing. Cindy Sutherland’s first novella, Cowboy Way, releases tomorrow from Dreamspinner Press, with another gorgeous cover by Paul Richmond. The blurb:

Ryan Andrews is on the run from past mistakes he doesn’t know how to fix. Lost and alone, all he really wants is a place where he can be himself, but when he pulls up at the ranch where he’s found a job and spies his gorgeous new boss, Ryan is pretty sure fate is out to get him.

Jake Evans is an ex-soldier trying to carve out a life on the ranch he inherited from his grandmother. He doesn’t even have time to realize how lonely he is until the new ranch hand shows up in his driveway. Ryan looks even more lost than Jake feels, and Jake’s locked-up heart seems to break open. Can these two men find in each other find the companionship they crave? Or will their pasts eclipse any possibility of a future?

Cindy was kind enough to provide me with a short excerpt from her story (after the cut). I read it in an early draft form and really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to reading the finished product!

Monday Music: Drown Me In Love

Starting the countdown to the Sand & Water release date, here’s one of the songs that helped serve as inspiration for John and Bryan’s story. I’ll be sharing the full soundtrack next week. 🙂

Release Date Approacheth!

Busy few weeks coming up. As some of you may recall (heh), my first novel, Sand & Water, releases a week from tomorrow (August 15). I’ve got several posts planned here leading up to it. I’ll have a guest blog for Cup O’ Porn later in the week. On the 15th, I’ll be taking over the Dreamspinner Press blog and will have giveaways and snippets to share. The following Saturday, the 20th, I’ll be chatting at Dreamspinner’s Goodreads page.

In the meantime, I’m working on two submissions due next week, and another due at the end of the month. Not to mention trying to get some actual writing time! And then there’s Dragon*Con weekend, and I’m working on setting up a “meet the authors” event (or two) for several of the M/M authors who’ll be attending.

I should start buying lottery tickets again. Maybe if I win, I can hire someone to do all the ancillary things so I can just write!

Six Sentence Sunday: Accidentally In Love

For this week’s Six Sentence Sunday, a moment from a soon-to-be-submitted novella about college roommates.

Grant slipped into the room as quietly as he could. Keith sure seemed to be sleeping, sprawled out on his stomach, one leg pulled up and one arm under the pillow supporting his head. Grant tried not to stare, but the sheet had pulled down, exposing the long line of Keith’s back in the low light from the window, and Grant couldn’t look away. Keith shifted as he watched, muscles bunching and stretching under his smooth skin, and Grant spun around on his heel, setting his backpack on his desk and pressing his eyes shut.

Cut it the hell out, he ordered himself. No crushing on the roommate.

Friday Feedbag: What’s On the Menu

The New York Public Library has a Tumblr, in case you didn’t know, and that’s how I found out about the What’s On the Menu project. The NYPL has a collection of about 40,000 historical menus, and they’re recruiting help from the general public to transcribe the dishes listed on these menus to make them searchable.

You can help by going to the site and picking from the available menus to transcribe. You can also search through the site, or download the current list of data that’s been transcribed, if you’re interested in what would’ve been served at, say, a 25th anniversary celebration for a journalist at the New York Press Club in 1987. Authors of historicals, take note! 🙂
