Release Day for “Chicago”!

It’s another release day! Dreamspinner’s 2011 Daily Dose set, First Time for Everything, is out today. Those who bought the set in advance will get a story a day all month long, or you can buy any of the individual stories starting today. You can also still purchase the full set, at a 32% discount off the individual sale prices.

My contribution to the set is the short story “Chicago.” The blurb:

Darren Lowell and Nathan Thomas are at loose ends in the Windy City. Darren came to visit his boyfriend, but after one too many insults, he dumped the conceited jerk and is taking some time to clear his head. Nathan just left the military and has a few days free before settling down into civilian life and beginning the job-search grind. A chance meeting in a hotel lobby that progresses into a spectacular night will make Chicago a whole lot more interesting for them both. Chicago may not just be a brief stop on their journeys—it could be the starting point for a passionate new future.

Enjoy! 🙂

Wrapup: Gaylaxicon/Outlantacon

My first “official” author event was a huge amount of fun. I didn’t stress out terribly, other than, as I’ve told several people, feeling like I was turned up to 11 all the time, which is exhausting! 🙂

I had a wonderful time with Ariel Tachna and Nicki Bennett, who are funny and fabulous and plied me with mimosas, mmmm. We spend quite a bit of time writing, both during lulls at the table and after hours. I also got to meet Kiernan Kelly and Kayelle Allen, who are awesome. And, in an astounding feat, Eugie Foster and I met at a non-Dragon*Con-related event and the world did not come to an end! (For our next trick, we’ll try something unrelated to any convention. Be afraid.)

We had a pretty steady stream of people at the table throughout the weekend, and it was interesting to me as a first-timer to see what drew their attention. While I did have something on the table (the Uniform Appeal anthology, all I have in print with Dreamspinner at this point), the convention is, of course, oriented toward scifi/fantasy, so that’s most of what we had available. I’ve been reading almost exclusively contemporary so far, but I picked up a ghost story and found a few more I want to read, too.

(Also, after telling Andrea Speed via Twitter that I’d sold a copy of Infected: Prey, I ended up in one of the most surreal tweet exchanges ever. It’s a very long story involving rental animal ripoffs.)

I spent other money, too, of course. The biggest thing: I ordered a corset. I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while, and the guys from Marvelous Mayhem were on hand with some of their beautiful products. Mine will need to be custom, since the standard size is too small in the bust and too large in the hips (as usual for me), so I won’t have it in time for this year’s Dragon*Con. But look out in 2012! 😉

Downside: I never did get to meet Amber Benson. Ah well. With any luck, she’ll be at Dragon*Con sometime soon!

Free Books at Dreamspinner!

I’ll have a post about Gaylaxicon/Outlantacon as soon as I have more than two free minutes (short version: AWESOME), but here’s a quick reminder to grab the freebies at Dreamspinner Press for the rest of this week!

Monday May 16, Litha’s Constant Whim by Amy Lane
Tuesday May 17, Cut & Run by Madeleine Urban & Abigail Roux
Wednesday May 18, Promises by Marie Sexton
Thursday May 19, His Hearth by Mary Calmes
Friday May 20, Love Means… No Shame by Andrew Grey
Saturday May 21, Luke by Jan Irving

I’ve read Promises, Love Means… No Shame, and Luke, and I can highly recommend all three. I haven’t read the other three yet, but I love the authors, so I can’t wait to read them!

(A note: For some reason, I’m not able to see the anniversary information on the front page of the website right now, but I went to the author page to get the link to the book and had no problem that way.)

Help Write Now: Come Over and Bid!

A Plea on Behalf of My Neighbors

I’m putting this part up front. Whether you read my ramblings or not, please, please donate to tornado disaster relief. As with other recent fund-raising efforts, there are several ways you can easily donate $10.

West Alabama Food Bank: text FOOD to 27722
The United Way Central Alabama: text TORNADO to 50555
American Red Cross: text REDCROSS to 90999
Salvation Army: text GIVE to 80888

The Alabama governor’s office has set up a website for donations here. If you can volunteer to go in and help with cleanup, especially if you have specific skills, you can register here and will be contacted as needed. (I did.) Editing to add one more site: Toomer’s for Tuscaloosa has information on sending supplies directly, including locations in different states.

I’ll also repeat something I said elsewhere: If you ever said “take care of our own first,” especially about the Japan earthquake, but haven’t done anything for tornado victims, then shut your damn trap.

Now, for the rest of the post.
